Typological-archetypical prophecy. One of the theologian Frédéric Godets insights

Publicerad 2020-03-14 12:23:00 i Doomsday, Eschatology, Frédéric Godet, The Book of Revelation, The second coming (the return of Jesus),

In the swiss theologian Frédéric Godet's (1812-1900) little exposition of the Book of Revelation in his "Biblical studies" (Bibliska studier, 1884), he proposes a way of interpreting the Book of Revelation that has helped me much, I find it extraordinarily good, the best I've found. It has to do with a typological-archetypical way of understanding the prophecies of that book, so that you don't interpret them to be dealing with certain historical events, one after the other, former and future events, but you understand them as types or archetypes that can be applied on many events and many things, both in the inward life and in history. So for example there does not exist one single Antichrist, but this word is an archetype, carrying the attributes of all antichrists throughout history, albeit one might be the last one and the worst one. So is it also with natural disasters and other signs of the end times. Also with the disasters there is the last and worst ones, but all such disasters throughout history has had a part in the fullfilment of end time prophecy. The historicizing way of understanding the prophecies in the Book of Revelation, is full of problems and does not work very well. How shall you for example understand the number 666 in that framework? It's impossible.
