Horses will be absolutely essential in the future. So also compost soil.

We focus so much on renewable energy technology and electric cars in our society, as the main saviour of our future. On the transition to a renewable energy powered society, with a way too big focus on technology.

Unfortunately I think this technology-focused transition is not going to work. The reason for that is laid out repeatably in many of the collapse blogs and Peak Oil blogs I link to on this blog. Here is one article on the subject, by Alice Friedemann on the blog Energy SkepticDavid Fridley, LBNL scientist, on why alternative energy won’t save us, posted on

We should not focus so much on renewable energy technology. We should instead begin to build what really will soften the collapse of civilization, if anything will (I do not say that solar panels on the roof will not soften the collapse). And here especially two things are absolutely essential:

1) to build out a horsepowered infrastructure in everything we do (I think horses, like us humans, like more to work on the fields and on the roads than to be idle in the stable), and

2) to gather a lot of compost soil. The latter we need to be able to do permaculture (which will save a lot of work, bot for animals and humans), and to make destroyed and dead soil alive again, which is absolutely essential for our survival after the end of synthetic fertilizers.

Both things take long time to build out. We have way too few horses, and way too little compost soil. Biowaste is nowadays often used to make biogas to power vehicles. This is one of the most stupid things we can do. I hope some politician reads this blogpost, and does something about it. I'm pretty powerless. The best I can do is to write, to write and again write.

If you want to read more about the need of horses in the future, check out Alice Friedemann's recent article Horses will be essential to wars in the future on the blog Energy Skeptic, posted on
